The Oak tree – Tree of the Year 2016

An important or threatened tree species is always selected as Tree of the Year.

Baum des Jahres

In 2016, the oak tree was chosen. This species of tree also occurs in the Vienna Woods. Due to its extensive root system, the oak tree can obtain water from great depths and can therefore survive long and intense periods of heat and drought. This deciduous tree is a veritable survivor, lending its name to various animals and offering shelter. Oak wood is greatly valued by the wood industry.

Detailed information on the Tree of the Year can be found at: www.bundesforste.at

My wish: Please send me photos of oak trees for publication.

Beech Forest in Spring

On our spring rambles we enjoyed walking through a healthy beech forest with plenty of fresh pale green foliage.

Frühling Frühling
The light green was balsam for our eyes! Also the undergrowth was already beginning to show healthy green leaves.

We will often visit this section of the woods in summer, until the leaves fall off in the autumn.

TIP: Enjoy the healthy woods as long as they are still standing and are not cleared!

Forests – a specific subject

At a New Secondary School in Liesing in Vienna, the subject “Forests” is being taught. The pupils regularly undertake field visits with the specialist teachers to study the woods.

You can obtain more detailed information about this flagship project at: www.brueckenschule.at

We were very pleased to receive this information from our friend Gerald who is also passionate about protecting our forests. He recognizes the important function of the forests for our survival.

My wish: That this school type finds many imitators!
